Tapping


Latex is obtained from the bark of the rubber tree by tapping. Tapping is a process of controlled wounding during which thin shavings of bark are removed. The aim of tapping is to cut open the latex vessels or to remove the coagulum which blocks the cut end of the latex vessels. Latex vessels are concentrated in the soft bast, the inner bark layer arranged in a series of concentric rings of towards the innermost region. The number, dimension and distribution of latex vessels and terconnecting vessels maximum being the proportion of hard bark show much variation from tree to tree in seedling population but not in budded trees of a clone. Variations do exist among clones.

Standards of tappability 


Henry Niklash Ridly first tapping was teaching in Singapur Botanical garden. Budded plants are tappable when they attain a girth of 50 cm at a height of 125 cm from the bud union. Virgin panels and renewed panels are opened at the same height i.e. 125 cm. It is economic to begin tapping when 70% of the trees in the selected area attain the standard girth. It may take six to seven years to reach this state in the traditional rubber growing region and up to 10 years in non-traditional regions. In seedlings, the first opening for tapping is recommended at a height of 50 cm when the girth at that level is 55 cm. The height specified for opening subsequent panels is 100 cm. The best period to open trees for tapping is March-April. The trees left behind for want of sufficient girth may be opened in September. In the immature phase, mean annual girth increase is around 7 cm, as against 2 cm or less under tapping. Hence, trees with less than 50 cm girth should not be opened for tapping unless otherwise recommended separately.

Marking, opening and flow of latex


The tapping cut of budded trees should have a slope of about 30° to the horizontal and for seedling trees only about 25°, since the fairly thick bark prevents spillage. A very steep cut leads to wastage of bark when tapping reaches the base of the tree and too flat a cut leads to overflow of latex from the cut. The slope should be marked annually using appropriate template. The latex vessels in the bark run at an angle of 3-5° to the right and therefore a cut from high left to low right will open more latex vessels. To avoid spillage, an inward slope is to be maintained on the tapping cut. In general, tapping on the basal 
panel is on half circumference (S/2) of the tree. It is desirable to divide the circumference into two equal halves in the first year of marking itself. Drainage area of latex is generally limited to an average of 70 cm towards the bottom, 40 em to the upper side and 5 cm from both ends of the tapping cut. The amount of latex exuded during a tapping needs to be regenerated fully in quantity and quality within the drainage area itself before the next tapping, and the time required for this is more than 48 hours in case of high yielding clones like RRII 105. When the tree is tapped and the vessel is cut, pressure at the location of the cut is released and viscous latex exudes. This exudation of latex results in the displacement of latex along the length of the latex vessel and laterally owing to strong forces of cohesion existing in the liquid phase. The resultant fall in pressure in the vessels leads to entry of water from surrounding tissues making the latex more dilute and makes the latex less viscous. Subsequent changes in the osmotic concentration in vessel damages lutoids present in latex. Damage of lutoids releases a protein named 'hevein' which forms cross link between rubber particles resulting in coagulation of latex at the cut ends of vessels. This leads to plugging of the vessels and cessation of latex flow.

Tapping depth, bark consumption and bark renewal

Latex vessels are concentrated near the cambium. Hence, high yield is obtained by tapping to a depth of less than one millimetre close to the cambium. However, for clones with very low virgin bark thickness, it is advisable to tap leaving at least 1.5 mm bark from cambium to avoid injury and wound reaction. But, too shallow tapping results in considerable loss of crop. Minor tapping wounds which heals in due course are permissible for medium and low yielding clones. On every subsequent tapping, a shaving of the bark along with the plugs of coagulated latex should be cut and removed. Bark regeneration is brought about by the activity of the cambium. The rate and extent of renewal are dependent on the genetic characters of the plant, fertility of the soil, climatic conditions, quality of tapping, tapping system, frequency and intensity, planting density and disease incidence. It is desirable to start tapping on renewed panel only after 10 years of opening.

Time of tapping, task and utensils Tapping should commence early in the morning as late tapping reduces the exudation of latex. Both 'Michie Golledge' knife used in India as well as the draw knife or 'Jebong' knife common in Malaysia are suitable for high and low level tapping and higher tasks. 'Jorwin' also known as "Manimooli' knife can be used more effectively in place of Michie knife as the tapper need not turn or knife need not be turned to tap front and back end of the cut in case of former. The knives should be sharp. The knives, cups, buckets, etc. should be cleaned well to prevent bacterial contamination and spoilage of latex. While fixing spout, care should be taken to fix it at half way mark of annual bark consumption (for effective protection of the cup by rainguard during monsoon). The tapping task (number of trees tapped on a day by one tapper) in India is 300- 400 trees. Headlights can be used for visibility during early morning tapping. Completion of tapping and latex flow in the early hours (02.00 to 6.00 hrs) is good for higher yield. It is particularly important during summer and in wind-prone areas.

Tapping systems


Response to different tapping systems varies from clone to clone. Trees of high yielding clones are to be tapped atleast on half spiral third daily (S/2 d3) system. Alternate daily tapping may be practised only for medium/ low yielding clones (RRIM 600, GT 1, PB 28/59 etc.). Low frequency tapping systems with appropriate yield stimulation is suitable to reduce cost of production and manage skilled tapper shortage to make rubber cost effective even under low price senerio.

Low frequency tapping


Low frequency tapping (LFT) with stimulation can be practis to reduce the cost of production, increase productive life of trees and to manage the tapping labour shortage. The systems recommended are of d3, d4, d6 or d7 frequency. Trees under higher frequencies of tapping can also be converted to LFT. However, when such conversion is done there will be a temporary yield depression. To minimise the depression effect, conversion may be done during the low yielding months (February-April). Success of LFT depends on regular tapping throughout the year with application of yield stimulant at stipulated schedules for each frequency and clone. The stimulation schedule varies with clone from the first of tapping age of the tree, tapping system and frequency. Method of yield stimulation recommended is application of 2.5% ethephon on the panel (applied on recently tapped area just above the tapping cut to a width of 1.5 cm) in all the above cases, For high yielding clones like RRII 105 under third daily (d3) tapping frequency with weekly one day regular off (6d/7), three annual stimulation and under 7/d7 only two rounds are needed. The updated stimulation schedule recommended for different systems of tapping and clones under 6d/7 and 7d/7 are given in Table 9. The scheduled stimulation for April may be postponed to May/ June, if soil moisture is deficient.

          When tapping is done by the grower himself, weekly tapping with rainguard would be most appropriate as the effort will be minimal without compromise on production. In addition to tapping on all scheduled days under d6 or d7, removal of bark shaving @ 2.5mm/tap, and tapping upto the correct depth (0.5 to 1.0 mm near to cambium) in all tapping days, and yield stimulant application as per recommended schedule ensures optimum crop. Trees which have undergone higher frequencies of tapping for the initial two or more converting to weekly (d7) tapping, monthly stimulation may be followed. Benefit to tappers from low frequency tapping is substantially high through increased over- poundage in estate sector. Since the success of LFT depends on regular tapping throughout the year under the opted frequency, timely rainguarding and an additional miniguard fixed during August/September to prevent rainguard leakage during North-East monsoon is essential in the traditional region. In case of heavy rain in early morning, instead of skipping tapping on rainy days, delayed tapping on same day during South-West monsoon is desirable. Whenever tapping is not done due to absence of the tapper or a holiday, the field/ blocks scheduled for such day should be tapped on the next day. If not, there will be temporary reduction in yield due to longer interval between two tappings. For reducing scrap (field coagulum) percentage, delayed and if needed second collection of latex in the evening should be practised.
