Method of soil & leaf sampling
DISCRIMINATRORY FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATION
Fertilizer recommendation based on soil and leaf analysis ensures site-specific fertilizer application for rubber and is the most ideal approach. It is desirable to assess the soil nutrient status before undertaking planting in nurseries or in main field, especially when the area is outside the rubber growing tract. Fertilizer recommendations based on initial soil analysis may be followed in the main field during the first four years, if the growth of plants is satisfactory. Discriminatory fertilizer usage based on soil and leaf analysis can be practised from fifth year onwards. In nurseries, the soil should be analysed once in three years.
Method of soil sampling
Select at random 5 to 15 spots (depending on the total area) and dig 60 cm deep pits at these spots. As it is necessary to ascertain the effect of past manuring on the fertility of the soil, locate pits at the site of past manure application. Do not sample road margins, labour line sites, cattle sheds, areas recently fertilised, marshy spots, or other non-representative locations. After removing the surface litter and mulch, cut a thin vertical section of soil from top to a depth of 30 cm using a sharp edged tool such as chisel. Pool all the samples of 0-30 cm depth from the different pits and mix well. If the size of the composite sample is large, reduce by quartering. For this, spread the well-mixed soil into a thin layered square on polythene sheet or newspaper. Divide the square into four equal squares and discard the soil in the diagonally opposite squares. Repeat thisp until about 500 g sample of soil is obtained. Prepare composite sample from 30-60 cm depth also in similar manner. Dry the samples under shade and pack them in clean cloth bags and never in manure-contaminated bags. Label each sample giving details of block sampled, depth of sampling and date of collection, and put the label in the bag. (Write the label with pencil and never in ink).

Fertilizer & Manuaring in rubber plant
Time and frequency of fertilizer application
The efficiency of fertilizer usage depends on the time, frequency and method of application. Unless the fertilizers are applied at the right time in the right way the chances of losses are more. Fertilizers should be applied when there is sufficient moisture in the soil. However, heavy rainfall period should be avoided to minimize runoff and leaching losses. In the year of planting, fertilizer application is done 2-3 months after planting i.e. during September- October. In NE regions, if planting is done during April- May with polybag plants, the first round of application may be done two to three weeks after planting followed by the usual round in September-October. From second year onwards, the fertilizers should be applied in two equal splits during April- May (pre-monsoon) and September- October (post-monsoon) when there is enough moisture in the soil.

Method of application
The method of application depends on the stage of growth of the plants. Young plants have only very limited root system in the initial few years. During the first year, fertilizers should be evenly distributed over a circular band of 30 cm all around the base of young plant, leaving about 7 cm from the base and slightly forked into the top 5 to 8 cm of soil. The plant bases should then be immediately mulched. The second application (9 months after planting) should be done in a circular band of 45 cm width leaving 15 cm around the plant base. The applications in subsequent years till the canopy of the rubber plants closes should be made in circular bands of steadily increasing width. Once the canopy closes, 5 to 6 years after planting, fertilizers should be applied in square or rectangular patches in between four trees and gently forked in. Where legume cover is present or where it has died out leaving a thick mulch, broadcasting in the inter-row areas can be resorted to. Deep pocket placement of fertilizers and application too close to the base of the trees should be avoided.

INTERCROPPING IN RUBBER PLANTATION
Intercropping in rubber plantation रबर बगीचा के बीच में अंत फसल
Rubber is planted at a wide spacing and hence sufficient land and light are available in the inter-row areas during the initial years for intercropping. Selection of intercrop should be made based on terrain of the land, light availability in the plantation and marketability.
Guidelines for intercropping

Establishment of cover crops
Manuring of cover crop Manuring of cover crop helps in establishment, easy maintenance and efficient nitrogen fixation. Application of 165 kg of powdered rock phosphate (18% P05) per hectare in two equal splits, the first, one month after sowing and the second, two months after the first application is recommended. In areas where the soils are deficient in available potassium, along with rock phosphate, 50 kg of muriate of potash also should be added. It is enough to broadcast the fertilizer on the strips where the cover crop is planted.

WEED CONTROL
Immature rubber
Mature rubber
In mature plantations, weeds appear depending on availability of sunlight. Unlike in the case of immature rubber, no competition exists between mature rubber trees and weeds. Weeding in mature plantations should not be for beautifying the plantation, but only to facilitate free movement of tappers. For more information please go to our youtube channel click here

Rubber cultivation, Stump, polybag nursery
Level lands with water table at least 60 cm below is ideal for raising seedling nursery. On slopes, nursery beds can be made along the contours. As sunlight is essential, shaded areas should be avoided. Soil should be deep, well- drained loam with good fertility status. Soil should be dug up to a depth of 75 cm and all stumps and stones removed, Raised beds (15 cm) should be prepared with width of 60 to 120 cm and convenient length. Pathways to facilitate cultural operations and drainage facilities should be provided in between the beds. The spacings adopted for planting in seedling nurseries are 23×23 cm (for green budding) and 30×30 cm (for brown budding). The planting rows at the specific distance is marked on either ends of the bed and a long cord with planting distance marked on it is stretched across the row marks. Germinated seeds are planted at each planting distance mark on the cord. One hectare of nursery land can accommodate around 75000 seedlings. With periodic thinning and 80 % budding success, about 50000 budded stumps will be available for planting. Only healthy and vigorously growing plants should be allowed to grow in the nursery. All weak plants should be removed as early as possible. Such culling should be done at fortnightly intervals.
